So, it wasn’t rigged after all…

So, it finally happened - the goblin got a job again. October 1st, I start as an IT-consultant in a small company. Hooray for that - I know that, I will be happier. And when I’m happy, things just go so much more smoothly.

It’s funny how much I rely on having a job for happiness. When I go at home for more than 2-3 weeks, I get restless, then bored, then bad stuff happens. You’d think that I would enjoy being at home with no stress, but the truth is: I get more stressed from having nothing planned than from having stress at work. I guess it’s the same for a lot of people - I know I’m raised with a job being something you had to have.

So, the company that I’m going to work for, is a small company with few employees and what seems like nice colleagues. What struck me when I was at the interview was how much focus they had on the interview itself and how much energy they put into it without going overboard. They had 2 persons out of a staff of 5 at the interview - one being the owner - the other the head of sales. They had prepared a long series of relevant questions, customer roleplay situations and a nice presentation of the company. The interview took about an hour and a half and everyone left with a good feeling - and they didn’t hide that fact.

I like honesty - and I feel they were very honest at the interview - I had some doubts entering the company - they had recently lost 2 important employees (when I start, I’ll be 1 out of 4) after having been 13 just a few years ago. They made a point of telling me the reasons for this without trying to hide facts or mistakes that had obviously hurt their pride. And the no. 1 fact that made me like the company - they were proud of it. They were absolutely thrilled about their baby - they have their own custom module for one of the leading brands for ERP-systems in Denmark.

Of course, there was some minor things that had me thinking - but it was minor things (for me, anyway). When I left the place, I thought I had decent chances of getting the job even though there were a couple of factors haunting me - no experience within their narrow target group. And I know one thing for certain - the story about me being 10 minutes late for an interview that took place a week after will haunt me at every christmas lunch for the next many years…
