MMORPGs continued

I usually think then write… then think of all the things I should have written – much to the dismay of my teachers who appearantly think that you should think a lot and then write and says that if I had just written all the stuff into the report before handing it in… I would have gotten a better grade.

Well, back to what I intended to write about – MMORPGs. I forgot the main reason why I dislike them… what I do as a player has no impact on the world – when I rid the realm of Goldtooth… 5 minutes later he’s back pestering innocent people again… in exactly the same model. It’s like a severe case of deja-vu when you start your new character and realize that even though you did your fair share of twacking leaders, they are back and in exactly the same numbers…

I realize that it would take a lot of man-power to invent new content everytime someone completes a quest, and it is probably not feasible since a lot of planning can be sent to the dust bin when players accidently kill of a villian that was supposed to lead a raid next week. But I’m left with an empty feeling when I hand in a quest for a reward that thousands before me have gotten – where do they keep this huge stock of equipment… do they use child-labour? And I’m beginning to think that we as players just get the cheap stuff that they don’t want to wear themselves… or that this NPC got all this stuff from a sale at a nearby outlet or something.

Since the company behind the MMORPG want us to play basically forever… I’m thinking that the Alliance probably will never beat the Horde… no matter how smart we are about it… and how many times we try.

I digress (it’s nothing new… but that’s another story best left for another day) – I hate following in the footpaths of thousands before me… the adventure of it all… well, it just isn’t there – we’re back at reading one of those Sword & Sorcery books of my youth only with a detailed guide, why I want to skip certain opportunities… My presence in the world has no impact on anything (well, aside from me getting time to write here…).

But I have hope yet… I can’t wait for NWN2 to come out – the first one certainly had me entertained for a couple of years – and I think the next one will be much the same only better… What they do that is ingenious is that we can build our own world – and then have players actually change how things work – maybe they finally rid the world of beholders, and suddenly there is a huge influx of minotaurs that were previously kept in check by the beholders… Gotta love consequences.

I have tried a great many times to play maybe a month on a server, then take a break – and when I got back, much had changed even if it was still the same world… now THAT is kewl.
